It starts so young!

Ok, so I was in Walmart the other day shopping for household items.  As a ritual...I made my way to the doll section just to look around.  I overheard this little girl discussing doll items with her mom.  She couldn't have been older than 10yrs old.  Anyway, she was going on and on about some of the play-sets she wanted which one of them included the Desire, Nikki, Christie or whatever Mattel is naming this doll.  She continued talking about wanting everything in the play-set but she didn't want the "dark" doll.  Then she said..."I guess I can play with it I just won't play with the doll."  I was SHOCKED!  My first thought was...WOW...in almost 2012...they still make kids like that?  Then I wondered if that attitude spills over to what kind of friends she chooses?  Now, this may come across as mean but I'm an upfront person, so I'm gonna say it.  On a daily basis, I pray for more language for my daughter but on this day and at that moment, I was wishing the little girl would just shut up.  Words are precious for some so when I hear some of the things that come out of some of these neurotypical children, it just saddens me.  Don't misunderstand, I realize she's a child and it's not her fault but the fault of those around her but to me, this was not ok.

Now, I'm from Chicago, Ill and it's been noted as one of the most segregated cities around so if I were on the North Side somewhere shopping (in Chicago) and heard that remark, I wouldn't be surprised.  However, I live in San Diego, CA which is one of the biggest melting pots in the US.  So, to hear her say that...especially in a VERY neutral area, was just a shame.  I think her mom noticed the look on my face because she tried to hurry the little girl out of the aisle.  I felt sad because I think of all the little black girls out there who have only a handful of AA dolls to choose from which are constantly subjected to change by the manufacturer while other little girls like her have lots of choices.  An example, in my area they stopped selling S.I.S. dolls six months ago.  So, now all I see at TRU, Walmart and Target are the Fashionistas and LIV dolls (I'm not a fan of Bratz and the Monster High dolls).  My daughter has several different dolls, Caucasian and AA and she plays with all of them at 3yrs old!

Wow, this is a shame.  Parents have GOT to do better!  Instead of worrying about a tattooed Barbie that wasn't even marketed for children, worry about habits your child may be forming NOW that will affect them in their adult life!  Please expose your child to all cultures...ESPECIALLY with their play!

Ok, I'm done. ;)

Kenya & Kevin hangin' out on a Sunday afternoon...

Update: Kenya and Kevin got back together and on Sunday, she called him over to help finish unpacking in her new condo. As you can see, they got a little side tracked. LOL...So, I thought I'd share a few random shots of them cuddling and playing around at Kenya's place. :)

My First Video...

First of all...my hat goes off to Vanessa - Ms. Leo -  Cat and Dollies Series for the making of their video stories.  Whew,  It's a lot of work loading this stuff!  It's not all bad but for me it was extra difficult because I need a new mouse.  It's literally being held together by duct tape, LOL. Unfortunately, with my mouse the way it is, it made it really hard to manipulate the timing of speech bubbles.  What should have only taken maybe an hour to do, took me like six hours.  You will notice one of the speech bubbles is pointing the wrong way and I didn't cut one off before the credits at the end but I'm just too lazy to fix it. ;)

Anyway, I hope you enjoy my very first video story.  It's a little dull because right now, I'm not so focused on the story telling lately (if you can tell) as I am camera angles, lighting, dioramas set up, still trying to figure out main characters other than Brooklyn and now...videos. :)  I don't know if I will make a video each and every time...I think Vanessa has the right idea with short photo stories here and there for a little updating on characters and such so I will try to keep a nice balance.  I see the simplicity of videos for the followers.  It's nice to let the video scroll through the photos for you and easier to follow who said what as far as dialogue.

Oh, I also opened a separate youtube account strictly for these videos.  The youtubers I currently follow, I don't think they're the collector type crowd so...I'm keeping it separate.  You will find my channel under PLASTIC BROOK and I've already subscribed to all of your channels.  Please feel free to leave any suggestions or tips that can be used in my next video...such as loading my OWN music not YOUTUBES. :)

Enjoy!

When you know part II

If you missed part I please CLICK HERE

Kevin pours the wine for a toast...

The couples enjoy a little conversation....

Brook and Jody decide to give the couple some privacy by venturing out on the patio.
(Kevin and Kenya were deep in conversation and didn't appear to be listening.)

Brook:  We're going out on the patio.  If you need anything...you know where to find us.

Jody:  Wait, one second...
Brook:  What's wrong?

Jody:  This is the perfect opportunity for me to practice...
Brook:  Practice?  Practice what...?

Jody slightly tips Brook over to gently kiss her...

And in one swoop...he lifts her in his arms...

Jody:  To practice carrying the future Mrs. Owens over our threshold.

Brook:  (Laughing) You are crazy Jo Jo
Jody:  Yes, so you know we're gonna have crazy kids right?  I hope you're ready for that...

Brook:  I'm ready for anything with you.

Stay tuned for final part III

Dolls & The City Episode...When you know

Brook invited Kenya over for a little wine and girl talk.  They discuss business at The Word Shop and the latest gossip of who's dating whom.

Kenya:  So...where's your future hubby tonight?
Brook:  He went to shoot pool with the guys.

Kenya:  You know my sister's going out with Seven Connors now?
Brook:  Seven? Isn't that Cree's boyfriend?
Kenya:  Well...he was but I guess they weren't "clicking" as he puts it.

Brook:  Huh.  How does Cree feel about this?

Kenya:  Well...she seems to be doing fine! She's moved on and last I heard she's  been on a few dates with Travis.

Brook:  Ok...I'm confused.  Isn't Travis dating Mia? I mean...that's what my sister told me.

Kenya:  I know right?  Well...apparently Mia couldn't deal with Travis's mother anymore.  She has a problem with the whole...interracial dating thing.  I guess she's still a little bitter about Mr. Baldwin re-marrying Taja.

Brook:  Oh, yeah.  Well...you can't get mad at the world behind relationships! None of us can control who we love.

The girls keep chatting while the wine chills on ice.

Brook:  Listen, Kenya...Jody's bringing Kevin home with him.  He really wants to see you!  Are you going to be o.k. with that?

Kenya:  Oh wow.  I - I'm not sure Brook.  There's still a lot of hurt there.
Brook:  Sweetie...I understand.  I'm not going to tell you that I know how you feel because I don't.

Brook:  But I've known Kevin for a long time and he's a really great guy.  He only married Lauren because she said she was pregnant and the whole time he thought she was, she was trying to get pregnant.  Now...he just wants to take care of his responsibility but you've  got to believe he filed for divorce when he said he did. He didn't know Lauren didn't sign the papers so the courts dropped the filing.

Brook:  That man loves you and he just wants another chance to prove it.

Kenya:  I know he does and I love him too.  That's why it's so hard!  I've never felt like this about anyone before.  I just don't want to get hurt.

Jody walks in...

Jody:  Hey Babe...I'm back!  Hey Kenya...what's goin' on girl?

Brook:  Hi, Baby...

Kenya:  Hey, Jo Jo!  Nothing much...

Jody:  So...did my baby miss me?
Brooklyn:  I always do...

Jody:  Well...how about a kiss to show me...
Brook:  Come here handsome...

Kissing...

Still kissing...

Kenya:  *Clearing her throat*

Kenya:  Oh for Pete's sake...get a room! *Giggling*

Brook:  Sorry girl...
Kenya & Brook:  *Giggling*

Brook:  So, babe...where's Kevin?

Jody:  Oh, he's parking his car...

Kevin enters the room...

Kevin:  Did I hear my name?
Jody:  Hey man...I was about to come looking for you...

Kevin:  Sorry man, had a little trouble finding a parking spot...

Jody:  Well, come on in man...

Jody:  Babe, me and Kev cleaned up in pool...you should have seen us.

Brook:  Where there's pool, there's always a wager with you two.  Hey, Kev...it's good to see you.  How's it going?

Kevin:  Hey, Brook...it's going, no complaints here.  Hello, Kenya.  You're looking beautiful...as always.

Kenya looked up at Kevin and immediately felt the butterflies.  She realized just how much she misses him.

Kenya:  Hello, Kevin.  Thank you...you too.  I - I mean...you're looking well.

Jody:  go ahead and make yourself at home man...have a seat.

Kevin:  These are for you, Kenya.  I remember how much you love roses.
Kenya:  Oh...wow...

Kenya:  Thank you!  They're beautiful!

Kevin:  You're very welcome beautiful.  And this little guy is for you too.  I'm hoping he will fit in with your teddy bear collection.

Kenya:  Aw...he's so cute.  Thank you Kevin.

Kevin takes a seat...

Kevin:  So, how have you been?
Kenya:  I've been ok.  Working, school and I finally moved into my new condo.

Kevin:  Wow, that's great!  I wish I would have known  you were moving in, I would have gladly helped out.

Jody:  Brook, babe...

Brook:  Yes, sweetie...

Jody:  Why don't you come sit with me so that Kevin can sit on the couch...
Brook:  Sure...

Jody:  Hello, beautiful...

Brook sits next to Jody and Kevin moves to the couch to be closer to Kenya...

Stay tuned to see how the visit ends...
