The Word Shop

Aja: Good evening everyone! Brook, Lyric and I want to thank you for coming out to our "unfinished business" (laughing).  No, really we do appreciate the support during our remodel. Just a reminder The Word Shop & Lyrical Cafe' will remain open for coffee with daytime hours but this will be our last evening event for a couple of months during reconstruction.  However, we have a real treat for you tonight! Coming to the stage  my very dear friend Maliki Soyinka, reciting a poem from her new CD Afro-fusion! By-the-way, don't forget to pick up a copy of her CD upstairs when you leave.

Aja: Maliki...come blow the stage up girl!

(Applause...)
Maliki:   Thank you! This piece is called "How do you kill a ghetto flower"
Throughout the easing of the clever night, a ghetto flower weaves with its magic, and surprises you by the bursting morning, with new, vibrant petals and leaves, and budding, stems; and delicately, boldly blooms with all its radiance - throughout the terrible, wonderful day; - With terrible wonderful strength...

Maliki: Then, thereafter, night by night by night,
reproduces,
fortifies, becoming a Garden;
then - a Field;
then -
a Forest;
then -
a Jungle!!

Maliki: Rising, again and again,
undaunted by
crushes and blows
and weather of brutality,
and fences tall...

Hunter and Cameron were having a great time and couldn't keep their eyes off one another.

Maliki finishes her poem and everyone applauds like crazy.

Maliki: Thank you so much, peace and blessings! Please welcome back to the stage, my sister from another mother, Aja Banks!

(Applause...)

Aja: Did ya'll know...?

Audience:  (Yells) Know what!!!

Aja: That they call me....Gorgeous because I just is...

One flash of my smile turns grown men to kids...

I kill 'em softer than Roberta Flack...
cuz I'm 38-24-38... Oh yeah, I'm stacked like
Denny's flapjacks...

The audience "oo's and aahh's" over Aja's poem and the beat of the music...

Jody see's Darren and goes to greet him...

While Maya enjoys a little girl talk with her favorite aunt, Marley she sees Taja stop Dylan on his way to the restroom...

Taja: Dylan, hi! I didn't know you'd be here...
Dylan: Sure you didn't...Taj...what are you up to? Is this a game to you? You know I'm here with my...

Taja: I just got goose bumps. I always loved it when you called me Taj...ha ha..
Remember that time when...

Dylan: Taja, I mean...Mrs. Baldwin...STOP it! I can't do this with you...

Aja reciting her poem in the background...

Aja:  Sarah made Hall & Oates smile...
but Kevin Costner wants to guard my body...
'cause I'm the Queen of the Nile...

They call me gorgeous 'cause I just is...
the best relief since alker selzer
'cause I got that fizz, fizz...

Like pepto to your bismol never dismal or grey
Can you see clearly now...?
like the song I'm your bright sunshiny day...

Taja: Dylan, please don't be so mean. I apologized. I'm human and we all make mistakes...but I still love you and I know that you feel the same.

Dylan: Look, you made your choice when you left me. And you're married now, did you forget that?  I'm in a committed relationship and I'm happy.

Taja: Happy? With that kid?!

Dylan: That "kid" knows what she wants in life, which is more than I can say for you. She loves me and I know she would never try and hurt me.

Taja: Dylan, I promise you...if you give us another chance, I'll never hurt you again.

Just then...Maya walks up

Waitress Brandy:  Uh oh, there's about to be some ponytails flying 'round here...

Maya:  Excuse me Taja, I'm getting a little tired of these private conversations and constant hands roaming over my boyfriend.  I know you're my cousin's friend and all but Dylan and I are a couple so whatever you have to say to him, you need to say it in front of me!
Taja: Look, Maya...Dylan and I have a history and whether you like it or not...you're going to have to deal with it.

Maya: You don't want me to "deal" with it Taja. What I said to you wasn't a request, it was a warning!

Dylan: It's ok honey, I have nothing further to say to her.

Dylan is surprised at Maya confronting Taja. He never thought of Maya as the assertive type and even though her demure demeanor was refreshing, he liked this side of her too.

Brooklyn walks up to the scene and takes Taja aside to have a word with her.

Lyric sings a song to close out the night...

Brooklyn:  Taja, what was that all about? You're my girl and all but Maya is family.  What are you doing?

Taja: Brook, I just can't get Dylan out of my mind. I miss him. I know Maya is your cousin and I would never want to come between you and your family but this is the man I was going to marry.

Brook:  Ah, yeah...speaking of marriage, you're in one...remember? I understand the trip down memory lane but honey, you can't just sweep a man under the rug because you want your old one back...

While Dylan gets the car, Aja and aunt Marley try to console Maya...

Aja:  Are you ok cousin?  I'm here for you.

Maya:  I'm fine you guys...thank you. I hope I didn't ruin everyone's night.

Marley & Aja:  No honey, not at all.

Brooklyn continues to talk it out with Taja while the bar gets ready to close for the night...

Byron and Reese say goodbye to Mia, Travis and Echo.

Mia:  Are you alright Reese?  You're lookin' a little tipsy, lol.

Reese:  (laughing) I am a little bit...but I've got my strong armed man to hold me up.

Byron:  Yeah, these arms aren't as strong as she thinks...
Hunter and Cameron get ready to call it a night but Cameron can't help but notice a woman who's been staring at them all night.

Cameron:  There's a woman over there with red hair who's been watching us the entire night.

Hunter:  Where?

Cameron:  Look over my left shoulder slowly...

Hunter looks over Cameron's shoulder and spots a woman with red hair and shades.

Cameron:  Do you see her?

Hunter catches the lady looking directly at him...

Hunter begins to get very nervous...

Cameron:  You see, she's looking at us.  Do you know her?

Hunter:  No!  Um, I really think we should go...now.  I forgot, I think I may have to check in with the firehouse tonight.

Cameron and Hunter leave in a hurry...

Byron still trying to hold a tipsy Reese up...

Byron:  Ok babe, let's go.  You're not the weight of a feather, you know.

Reese:  Jeez...thanks.  You say such romantic things.  Bye guys!
